Going dog sledding without the right equipment can be incredibly risky, especially if you are going to be sledding in adverse weather conditions. While there are literally hundreds of different things you could potentially need while out dog sledding there are a few necessary pieces of equipment that you should never leave home without. One of the most important things to carry with you at all times is a few spare harnesses in case a harness breaks. If a harness breaks and you don’t have an extra or a way to repair it your entire dog sled team will be unbalanced and much less effective.
Since most dog sledding occurs in the wilderness where you are far away from help if something goes wrong you also need to bring the appropriate equipment to prepare for an emergency. In addition to the appropriate cold weather clothing which you should always have on any dog sled trip it would also be a good idea to bring a small tent or at the very least a cold weather sleeping bag in case something happens and you wind up having to spend the night in the cold. Bringing along some food and other emergency supplies is always a good idea as well but it is up to you to determine how much you might need. Another one of the most important pieces of equipment to have when sledding in the wilderness is a firearm. Not only is a gun necessary to protect yourself from wild animals such as wolves but it could also save your life if you get lost or stranded and are in desperate need of food. A decent set of tools for emergency repairs to the sled or harnesses is also a must have addition to the list of equipment you need when dog sledding.
